Working with Braille Files

Happy New Year! This month we will explore Braille files for students who are blind or visually impaired. Exploring Braille files will help make education more inclusive for these students.

Braille is a tactile reading system that consists of a series of 6 raised dots evenly arranged in quadrangular letter spaces or cells. The configuration of dots can be read with the fingertips by people who have a visual impairment. Braille can be contracted or uncontracted, in either Unified English Braille (UEB) or English Braille, American Edition (EBAE). AIM-VA braille materials are provided by the Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI).

Accessibility Features Braille

  • Physical hard copy of the reading material.
  • Embossed braille text is bound in manageable sections/volumes.
  • Raised dots for tactile reading with fingertips.

Compatible programs that work with Braille

Screen readers are software programs that allow blind or visually impaired users to read the text that is displayed on the computer screen with a speech synthesizer or braille display. A screen reader is the interface between the computer's operating system, its applications, and the user. They are designed to relay content from a screen through auditory speech or tactile Braille output.
