AIM-VA’s Book Series Spotlight: Here’s Hank
Here’s Hank
By Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver
AIM-VA’s Accessible Format Library
AIM-VA has a library of over 10,000 accessible instructional materials including a wide variety of accessible formats of favorite reading books. As educators who become Digital Rights Managers (DRMs) order materials for students, these materials are housed in AIM-VA’s digital library, ready for others to quickly order and download for their qualifying students.
One popular book series is Here’s Hank by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver.
The chapter book series Here’s Hank features Hank Zipzer, a smart second grader with learning challenges that have not been diagnosed —yet! Hank struggles with memorizing and spelling. Hank knows he has trouble with schoolwork such as book reports and spelling tests. He uses his creativity and language skills to prove to his teachers and peers that he is smart.
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) tells us that approximately 42% of students with disabilities are identified with a specific learning disability with a majority of these students experiencing difficulty with reading. Students who struggle with decoding can continue to build their vocabulary skills and engage in reading about the inspiring adventures Hank has in and out of the classroom.
AIM-VA has converted this series to a variety of accessible formats. These formats allow a reader customized supports such as navigation, text-to-speech, and annotation. Consider ordering this series in accessible formats to keep reluctant readers engaged in text and building their vocabulary, confidence, and independence this summer.
